Targa Newfoundland – It’s about more than just the drive!
It is a warm September evening. I am sitting in the showroom of Sin City BMW – a BMW restoration shop in Las Vegas, NV, enjoying a cold brew in the company of Chris Willett – owner of this fire station converted car garage and fellow Targa competitor. A mere two weeks have gone by since Chris and I were sharing a drink in St. John’s, Newfoundland – some 6500km away, awaiting the beginning of the Targa Newfoundland gala dinner. “So, how is the BP Oil Spill doing these days?” he asks me. I smile while I glance over at his beautiful BMW 318is Targa race car across the showroom floor. The oil residue on the front of the car is still visible. More than once I found myself checking my rearview mirror in expectation for his ‘arrival’ during the first few days of the race. So how is it that this 140 or so horsepower BMW was catching up to and passing my 300 horsepower Audi 80 quattro? Well, that dear reader is a long story. So make yourself comfortable and allow me to take you on the trip of a life time. Read the full article at Eurotrash Motorsports at Targa Newfoundland - Against All Odds
...from the Autonet.ca blog
Ottawa's Eurotrash Motorsports not only had to rebuild its rare 1993 Audi 80 Avant after a scary off-road excursion during the Targa school on Bell Island, but their nightly persistence paid off as the car continually and miraculously improved each day on route to the finish. Driver Emil and his father Boris Poliakov always wore smiles on their faces, and assisted other unlucky or struggling teams throughout the rally before crossing the line themselves some eight days after their incident. If ever there was an example of the “Targa Spirit” that's necessary to see this event through to completion, these guys are it – top of class and congrats boys!
